Your Solar Journey

Buying solar and batteries is one of the most significant investments an Australian household will make. It some ways, it is very similar to purchasing a new car. The costs are comparable, there is similar excitement levels, however it is actually a much more complex process. Brands are unfamiliar, quotes vary dramatically, the terminology is confusing, rebates keep changing, and the technology itself is evolving quickly.

Welcome to your Solar Journey

The Solar Nerds have complied all the information to help you along your solar journey. It is a guide to help you navigate that complexity with confidence. It brings together the practical knowledge a homeowner needs at every stage. From understanding how the technology works, through sizing and pricing the right system for your home, to choosing an installer and living with your system long after the crew has left your roof.

The guides below are organised around the three core topics most homeowners move through: understanding the product, planning the right system, and buying and living with it. Regardless if you are new to solar, or if you already know what you are looking for, each guide stands on its own.

Planning the right system for your home

No two households need the same system. Roof size, orientation, shading, tariff structure, daytime occupancy, existing appliances, and future plans, an EV, a pool pump, a heat-pump hot-water system. All shape what a correctly sized system looks like for you. Most importantly, how do you ensure you don’t get ripped off? How do you know you’re spending the right amount on your system?

Buying your system and living with it

Once you’ve chosen the system and the installer you want, it’s not as simple as picking it up off the shelf. Worryingly, most of the real risk in a solar purchase sits here. A proper understanding of the installation process is key to a smooth experience. Even after a perfect installation, a system requires maintenance. Knowing what the expect will save you from a lot of future stress.

Solar and battery basics

Not only is it hard to know what the best brands are, you have to do so for separate products, models and variants. You’re asking yourself three questions, what are the best solar panels, what are the best inverters & what are the best batteries. That’s not even including the learning curve to understand how solar solar panels, inverters, and batteries actually generate, convert, and store electricity, and how they interact with your existing meter, grid connection, and household appliances.

Who are the Solar Nerds?

First off, we’d like to think that it’s not only us that are Solar Nerds, but also you. On a more serious note however, Solar Nerds is a trademark owned by Solaris Finance, a finance company that specialises in the solar and battery market.

Why do we do this?

We use our Solar Nerds brand to market our finance business. As a consumer, you will mainly see our articles helping you through your buying journey, however that’s only a part of our content. We provide free training to solar vendors and also publish installation data all for free.

Rather than focus on “getting” sales for our finance business, we focus on “giving” to the broader solar community. We’re happy with whatever we get in return.
