Solar Panel (PV) Rebates
The solar panel rebate remains a key incentive, reducing the upfront cost of installing a solar system and making solar energy more affordable for Victorian households.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Ownership: Must be the owner-occupier of an existing property, or the owner of a home under construction.
- Income: Combined household taxable income of all owners must be less than $210,000 per year.
- Property Value: The property must be valued under $3 million.
- Previous Rebates: The address must not have previously received a solar panel (PV) or battery rebate under the program.
- System Age: The property must not have had a solar PV system installed in the last 10 years.
Rebate Details
- Amount: Up to $1,400 or 50% of the system cost, whichever is lower.
- Examples:
- $2,500 system → $1,250 rebate
- $4,450 system → $1,400 rebate (capped)
- $6,600 system → $1,400 rebate (capped)
Application Process
- Research: Review eligible products using the Solar Panel Buyers Guide.
- Consult Retailer: Work with an authorised solar retailer to discuss system options.
- Obtain Quote: The retailer provides and uploads your quote to the Solar Victoria portal.
- Upload Documents: Provide proof of ID, property ownership, and household income.
- Receive Approval: Once approved, you will receive an eligibility number and QR code.
- Install System: Complete installation within 120 days (existing homes) or 270 days (new builds).
- Payments: Rebates and loans are deducted from your retailer’s invoice, with any remaining balance paid by you.
⚡Important: Rebates are released in limited monthly batches. Applying early each month increases your chances of securing one before allocations are exhausted.
Solar Battery Loans – Program Ended
The Victorian Government’s interest-free solar battery loan program (up to $8,800) ended on 30 June 2025. Solar Victoria is no longer accepting new applications.
- Homeowners who were approved before the closure can still proceed under the original terms.
- For new applicants, no state battery loans are currently available.
This means that while batteries remain an important part of energy independence, financial support for them is no longer offered under Victoria’s Solar Homes Program.
Solar Homes Package
The Solar Homes Package originally combined rebates for solar panels with loans for batteries. Since battery loans have now ended, the program focuses on solar PV rebates and their matching interest-free loans.
By combining the rebate and loan, eligible homeowners can reduce upfront costs by up to $2,800 ($1,400 rebate + $1,400 loan).
Application Requirements
To successfully apply, prepare the following documentation:
- Identification: Two forms of ID (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) with matching names.
- Proof of Income: Recent pay slips or tax returns to confirm eligibility.
- Property Ownership: A council rates notice or certificate of title.
Key Considerations and Tips
- Apply Early: Monthly rebate allocations are limited.
- Authorised Retailers: Always choose an authorised solar retailer to qualify.
- Budgeting: Factor in loan repayments if you opt for the interest-free loan.
Conclusion
Victoria’s solar incentives remain a strong opportunity for households to cut their energy bills and contribute to a cleaner future. Although the solar battery loan program has ended, the solar panel rebate and loan options continue to provide substantial savings for homeowners.
